About Thorntons
Traveling confectioner Joseph Thornton asked his son Norman to manage his new sweet shop in Sheffield, but he had no idea how well-known Thorntons would grow. Due to the success of his initial sales of sweets like Violet Cachous and Sweet Lips, Norman brought his brother Stanley on board. It wasn't until the 1920s that the brothers began producing their own handmade fondants and truffles; this is when Thorntons' actual craftsmanship started.
Before long, Thorntons had a factory specifically designed to make its confections. Production was relocated to Derbyshire, which is just down the road from where it is now, as the company's growth and popularity increased. It has remained there for nearly 40 years.
